BMW i Flexible Mobility
With the BMW i3, you don’t need to restrict yourself to 200 kilometres*. As part of a BMW i fleet or company car contract, you have the option of temporarily switching to conventionally powered BMW models. If you’d rather not do without the BMW i3 for longer journeys, the optional Range Extender delivers an increased range of up to 300 kilometres*. It includes a petrol unit which supplies additional electricity for the electric motor.
* Determined in internal BMW consumption studies. The driving range is depending on a variety of factors, especially: personal driving behaviour, selected route, weather conditions, usage of heating/cooling and preconditioning.
BMW i Assistance Services
We’ve expanded our existing range of premium assistance services to meet the unique new demands of e-mobility – and the result is our comprehensive BMW i Mobile Care service package. Should a BMW i3 from your fleet break down or run out of power, you can rely on rapid support from a broad range of BMW i Services, covering everything from immediate assistance with charging problems and mobile charging solutions in emergencies, to towing services and guaranteed replacement cars, and even special maintenance and repairs.

The navigation system also flags up all available charging stations on the route as well as alternative means of transport. What’s more, the BMW i Remote App allows you to plan the optimal route before setting off and check the maximum range whenever you need to. Using the smartphone app, you can access key data such as the battery charge level, range, and charging stations at any time.
THE NEW BMW i8: THE MOST PROGRESSIVE SPORTS CAR.
Progress does not accept compromise. It pushes the boundaries of the possible - and goes beyond them. This is how a vision becomes reality – for a future you can experience today. The new BMW i8 is a reality: a full-blooded sports car that comes with innovative BMW EfficientDynamics technology including eDrive and intelligent lightweight construction to deliver an exceptionally dynamic driving experience. Yet its consumption is comparable to that of a compact car.
PRODUCTION & SUSTAINABILITY.
With the BMW i3, the BMW Group is set to launch an electrically powered production vehicle onto the market that represents a new form of sustainable mobility in urban areas. As the first premium electric vehicle, the BMW i3 rises to the social, ecological and economic challenges of our time. With its groundbreaking vehicle architecture, the concept calls for the use of modern lightweight construction materials as well as innovative production processes.
BMW i Production
The BMW i3 was the first vehicle project for which sustainability objectives were agreed and subsequently pursued with the same vigour as cost, weight and quality objectives. The aim is also to reduce the environmental impact of production as much as possible, focusing on aspects such as energy supply and water consumption, solvent emissions and waste treatment.
The innovative architecture of the BMW i3 comprises two elements: the aluminium Drive module – which incorporates the powertrain, chassis, battery, and structural and crash functions – and the Life module or passenger cell, made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic.
Carbon-Fibre-Reinforced Plastic
The Life module of the BMW i3 is made primarily of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). This innovative material is produced by the SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers (SGL ACF) joint venture. The SGL ACF factory in Moses Lake in the USA produces carbon fibres from a polyacrylonitrile-based thermoplastic textile fibre precursor. In a complex multi-stage process, the various constituent elements of the fibre are removed by gasification, eventually leaving a fibre that consists of virtually pure carbon with a stable graphite structure.
All of the energy used in carbon fibre production in Moses Lake is obtained from renewable, locally generated hydroelectric power and is therefore completely CO2-free. The state-of-the-art plant in Washington State also sets standards in energy efficiency.
The thermoplastic outer skin
The BMW i3 is the first ever BMW with an outer skin made entirely of thermoplastic. The only exception is the roof, which is made of recycled CFRP. The weight of the plastic parts is around half that of sheet steel parts. Plastic also provides corrosion-free outer protection and requires less energy to manufacture, as well as being resistant to minor damage. The thermoplastic outer skin is produced using 25 per cent recycled or renewable material.
BMW Plant Leipzig
With the opening of the Leipzig vehicle plant in 2005, the BMW Group created additional production capacities and currently produces automobiles there for customers all over the world. In fall 2013 the series production of BMW i3 started, and in spring 2014 the series production of BMW i8 – two future-oriented cars featuring alternative drive concepts and an innovative lightweight body construction.
In July 2013, the BMW Leipzig plant took four wind turbines into service on the factory premises. These Nordex wind turbines have a total power output of 10 MW. This is more than is required for future production of electric cars.
